So the time finally came to make the big (or little) move. In anticipation we sold almost everything we could from couches, crib, bookshelves, old computers, sporting gear, and even Christmas toy soldiers to minimize our life for the move east. Since the NY apartment already had basic furniture we decided to take only what fit in our Passat Wagon. We widdled it all down to fit and left behind some storage at mom and dad's in Highland. Then on Oct 18th Bridger and I flew out on the airplane and left Micah to drive the Passat with a carload full and a giant stuffed bear companion. We made it, and quickly adopted our tiny living to a studio and a walk in closet as Bridger's bedroom. It worked fairly well with some creativity!
Within our first two weeks of arriving in our new home we experienced Hurricane Sandy, which proved to be the largest Atlantic Hurricane on record. It caused $75 billion in damage and killed over 200 people. I was able to serve one Saturday by going out to the Rockaways' with Mormon Helping Hands and assist families clean and dig out from the damage the savaging storm dealt them. I took some pictures of the horrific scene, but it was on an older phone so I no longer have them.
Although the images will always be burned into my memory forever, and the feeling of that service opportunity will be etched in my heart forever.
Right after the storm came Halloween, it almost felt wrong to celebrate a holiday in the wake of so much tragedy, but alas the human spirit to move forward and renew carried us on. Bridger was a frog that year, and discovered the stoops of Marcus Garvey in Harlem!
Hoppity Halloween!
